Thanksgiving Weekend Memories

Image
Isn't this adorable? My sister-in-law made it for us. Each year she and her mom and sisters make crafts like this to give to each extended family. I want to start this tradition with my girls this year. We love to craft!

Here is our Christmas tree waiting to be decorated. I think we'll tackle it tomorrow while Zach and David are still in town. We didn't have time today as my brother, Clint, and his family came over to watch the BYU-USU football game in our theater room. David's brother, Danny, and my niece and her husband also joined us. It was a great game and so much fun to spend that time with my baby brother and sister-in-law. The girl cousins all made Christmas crafts while the game was on. :)

Thanksgiving Memories

Our Thanksgiving Day was so much fun! Every member of David's family, minus only two, gathered in our home for a delicious turkey dinner. There was football watching in our theater room (high definition!) and the Hallmark channel on upstairs for the mommies needing to rock and nurse their babies. There was happy conversation and a lot of laughter. Everyone was in a good mood, enjoying one another's company. It was absolutely wonderful.

I think we had thirty-six family members altogether, including four adorable babies. I got to hold two of them. :) And, we had a family photo taken, in our backyard. My sister-in-law is going to photo shop in the missing couple (my niece and her husband who live in Oregon). This will be the first complete family photo in years. I know it means a lot to my mother-in-law. I can't wait to have our own copy.

I did have a moment of sadness thinking about how there will not be a family gathering like this with my side of the family this year. Oh…

Our family scripture for the week.
We are busy at our house preparing for Thanksgiving Day. Lots of housework, shopping, decorating and special touches. Then, of course, cooking on Wednesday and Thursday morning! It's a lot of prep work, but it will be worth it. Nearly all of David's family will be here. It's exciting! We will have a house full, that's for sure. I am really looking forward to it. David's mom arrives tomorrow so we are preparing one of the girl's rooms for her. My two girls will room together. Darcie's roommate is already using our guest bedroom downstairs. She's a really nice girl. She and her sister plan to join us as well on Thanksgiving. That will be nice because they can take a family picture for us. Oh, I'm so excited, but now, back to the housework.
It's nice that our ward (church congregation) took this whole week off from all meetings and activities, so that families could spend the week together. And, it's nice tha…

Our Happy Heart's scripture verse for this week.  It came to me today as I was reflecting on recent world events. Our thoughts and prayers continue to go out to Paris and all of France and especially to those families who have lost loved ones. May they find peace and solace.

We are preparing to leave for our drive home on Thursday. Yay! We are really looking forward to spending Thanksgiving Day with most of David's family. It's going to be great! Some are even joining us for breakfast. David's going to make his famous waffles. They're delicious! There will be football watching in the theater room, Marissa is heading up play activities for the little ones. I can't think of anything better than a day of yummy food and family togetherness. David's mom is going to especially love it. We haven't had a Madsen family holiday celebration in I-don't-know-how-long.

Treasure Island Mine Craft Style!

Image
Marcus and I recently finished reading, Treasure Island, by Robert Louis Stevenson, together, and then we watched the movie. We watched the version with Charlton Heston as Long John Silver, and a very young Christian Bale as Jim Hawkins. When we get home for Thanksgiving we will also watch Disney's Treasure Planet, which I ordered from Amazon and had shipped to our Utah home. Marcus has never seen this movie before and I think he will like the futuristic spin.

Now Marcus is writing a five-paragraph essay about the story. I can't wait to read it.
To bring in some art, Marcus designed his own pirate flag and treasure map. He decided to give it a Mine Craft take! Here are the results-

You have to look closely, but his Mine Craft treasure map includes a compass, and he burned the edges. Oh, and the map is square because Mine Craft is square.

This is his creeper pirate flag. If you know what a Mine Craft creeper looks like, you know they are green with black eyes and mouth, but pir…

Our Happy Heart's scripture verse for this week.
Our Family Home Evening will be centered around Marissa's Personal Progress. Personal Progress is a goal oriented program for young women ages 12-17 in our Church. There are seven values associated with Personal Progress-
Soon Marissa will have earned her Young Womanhood medallion, just like her sister, Darcie, before her, and their mom, before them. :)
Here's what I'm thinking for our menu this week:
Monday- Chinese sundaes Tuesday- Grilled tuna and soup Wednesday- Tacos Thursday- Stir fry Friday- Subs
I wish all of my friends and family a wonderful week. Smile at everyone you see. Be kind to others. If someone's beliefs differ from yours, show them tolerance and love. Share your opinion in a respectful way. If someone shares their heart with you, accept it. Don't stomp on it. Remember, we are all God's children, all spirit brothers and sisters. And if you don't understand something, go to the source a…

Our Cactus/Desert Unit

Image
Recently, we finished up a cactus/desert unit study. It was a lot of fun! We decorated part of our homeschool wall to bring a little of the Arizona desert landscape indoors.

The cactus on the left is a common one here, called Prickly Pear, and of course the one in the center is the famous Saguaro. I'm not sure what the plant on the right is called, but we see them all the time around here.  Marissa drew the little owl nesting in the Saguaro and I printed the rattle snake, scorpion and toad from a free download from this website.

The wall wasn't the only project we had going on. Marcus made his own desert diorama featuring 3 different cacti. These are the supplies he used, all from the dollar store (except for the box and glue).

He constructed his Saguaro out of floral foam.

The small red cactus on the left is a California Fire Barrel and the orange cactus on the right is a Golden Torch.

Marcus did some research on all three cacti and made a little cactus flip book. This page …

Sunday Thoughts

I want to share highlights of the lesson given in my Relief Society class today. I was taking notes because it was that good! The credit for the inspiration behind this post goes to the 2nd counselor, Heidi, who gave the lesson.

She started out by giving a background history of the Provo Tabernacle. The Provo Tabernacle was completed in 1898 and served as a beautiful gathering place for the community until one December morning in 2010 when a devastating fire struck. leaving only the shell and spires of the historic building. In the October 2011 General Conference, President Thomas S. Monson, announced that the tabernacle would be converted into Utah's sixteenth temple.

Don't we all experience "fires" of some kind in our own lives? These could be described as any event that shakes up our faith. I knew one young mother whose faith was shaken when her son was born with a heart defect. Other "fires" might be a tragedy, the death of a loved one, divorce, betraya…
