Sunday Thoughts

And if men come unto me I will show unto them their weakness. I give unto men weakness that they may be humble; and my grace is sufficient for all men that humble themselves before me; for if they humble themselves before me, and have faith in me, then will I make weak things become strong unto them.                       (Ether 12:27)
I love this verse of scripture in the Book of Mormon. I was studying it this morning, and then at church today, we covered this awesome talk by Dieter F. Uchtdorf, entitled, You Matter to Him. At the end of his talk, we are counseled to consider four divine principles, and the second one stood out to me-
The Lord entrusts "the fullness of [His] gospel [to] be proclaimed by the weak and simple unto the ends of the world." (See D&C 1:23) He has chosen "the weak things of the world [to] come forth and break down the mighty and strong ones" (D&C 1:19) and to put to shame "the things which are mighty." (1 Corinthians 1:27…

Fun at the Zoo

On Wednesday we visited Utah's Hogle Zoo with our awesome Canadian friends, the Schilling family. We had so much fun. Here are some highlights-

Hey Mom,

I know what you mean about time. It's weird out here. Sometimes, I feel like I could just do this forever, and just keep it up and keep going strong, and other times, I feel like I should have been done ages ago. It's weird. I don't know what to feel about it most of the time. It's nice to be busy though, and when I'm busy enough I just don't have time to think about it, ya know? I think that's probably one of the things I really enjoy the most about the mission, is just that we don't really have all that much time to think about ourselves.. it's all about others. Helping them learn and grow and become better and more stable. I think it's a really sweet opportunity.
This week was pretty good. Last P-Day we went to the driving range and hit some balls. One of the members of the Temple Presidency was there and he gave us a few pointers. We needed all the help we could get. It was fun though. And then we went over and got shakes and I end…

Becoming Perfect in Christ

Yea, come unto Christ, and be perfected in him, and deny yourselves of all ungodliness; and if ye shall deny yourselves of all ungodliness, and love God with all your might, mind and strength, then is his grace sufficient for you, that by his grace ye may be perfect in Christ; and if by the grace of God ye are perfect in Christ, ye can in nowise deny the power of God.  (Moroni 10:32)

I love this article on about becoming perfect in Christ. Here is some of the council that stood out to me-

"The Savior’s freely given atoning love helps us become more forgiving and less judgmental of others and of ourselves. This love heals our relationships and gives us opportunities to love, understand, and serve as our Savior would."
"Fully accepting our Savior’s Atonement can increase our faith and give us courage to let go of constraining expectations that we are somehow required to be or to make things perfect. Black-and-white thinking says everything is either absolutely pe…

I Love My Family

It was so much fun to visit with two of my awesome brothers, their lovely wives, and some of my coolest cousins at a BBQ my amazing sister hosted earlier this month. Some of my wonderful aunts and uncles were also there. I feel so blessed to have such incredible extended family! I hope they each know they are a special part of my life. I don't see them nearly enough, and it was great to catch up with them. I hope some of them can make it to Elder Madsen's homecoming next month. Please come if you can!

Aug. 18, 2014 Bonus!

Elder Madsen wrote us a bonus email this week and sent extra pics:

Love you all! I've gotta run, but it's been awesome. We're so close! Keep praying for me. We all gotta finish this strong. And pray that it doesn't rain this week! I think we're gonna fast about. We need that sunshine.  I love you all! have an amzing week! Here's something I wrote to the mission President this week.. Mom, you can throw this in my weekly email toyou :P

I'm really excited for this week. I'm sure that zone conference will be an awesome experience. And I'm really excited to go through the temple again. I love the temple, it's such a great place. Sometimes, it's hard serving here, knowing the temple is right there and we can't just go whenever we want to. But I suppose that that has helped me to have a much deeper appreciation for how close I'll have temples when I'm in Utah. I want to go as often as I can. Which I guess is really only as often as I wa…

Hey Mom!  I think Galician is Eastern Europe. Could be wrong though.
This week has been really good. We've been walking a ton still and talking to lots of people. Our zone did awesome again this week. We talked to 3529 people this week. We have several companionships that are on fire. We're going to call President and talk about the possibility of getting our zone up to Calgary for a day. I think that'd be way cool, and I think with the attitude our zone has that they'd do really well up there for a day. So hopefully we can get that to happen.

We've found a man named Mike, and we talked to him on the street, our appointment then fell through, but we ran into him on the street, and he told us that he'd read the book of Mormon, prayed about it, and knew that it was true and accepted to be baptized for the first weekend in September. So we're really excited for that!

That lunch you saw was fun. The Laings are a good family. I didn't realize she was taking…

Sunday Thoughts

What is a prophet?

And Ammon said that a seer is a revelator and a prophet also; and a gift which is greater can no man have, except he should possess the power of God, which no man can; yet a man may have great power given him from God. (Mosiah 8:16)
A prophet is "a teacher of known truth".

A seer is "a perceiver of hidden truth".

A revelator is "a bearer of new truth".

And I will give unto thee power to be mighty in expounding all scriptures, that thou mayest be a spokesman unto him, and he shall be a revelator unto thee, that thou mayest know the certainty of all things pertaining to the things of my kingdom on the earth. (D&C 100:11)

Something Is Wrong

I honestly believe that something is wrong with a purely secular education. "We should not assume that public schools always reinforce teachings given in the home concerning ethical and moral conduct. We have seen introduced into many school systems false ideas about the theory of man's development from lower forms of life, teachings that there are no absolute values, attempts to repudiate beliefs regarded as supernatural, permissive attitudes toward sexual freedom that give sanction to immoral behavior and "alternative lifestyles," such as lesbianism, homosexuality, and other perverse practices.
Such teachings not only tend to undermine the faith and morals of our young people, they also deny the existence of God, who gave absolute laws, and the divinity of Jesus Christ. Surely we can see the moral contradiction of some who argue for the preservation of endangered species but who also sanction the abortion of unborn humans."                  -Ezra Taft Benson “…

Elder Madsen will be home in one month! Hey Mom! And Midget?!
This week was exhausting. I'm so tired. And I've been to bed early every night, but we've been up and going strong at 7:00 am every morning, and we haven't stopped until 9pm, and sometimes later. There were 4 days of pancake breakfasts this week and we were at every one and talking to everyone. Honestly, it was amazing. Being just going going going so much just opened doors and we saw so many people.. we taught a record number of lessons to our less actives, and really saw miracles there, and just.. amazing things happened. Elder Call and I talked to almost 700 people over the last 5 days. And that's not just talking, that's sharing a scripture and inviting them to do something. For Cardston, that's pretty amazing. As a zone, we hit almost 3000 people. And 2/3 of that was the Cardston district. Like, we really did a good job.. and I"m not saying that to brag... we're apparently leading…

August 4, 2014

Please pray for Elder Madsen. He has been suffering with tonsillitis for weeks now. Hey Mom! Or should I say Sveiki!

I'm doing good. Nothing much to complain about. This last week was crazy. I feel like we didn't get any missionary work done at all, but yet we were totally busy the whole time. Kind of a funny story. We go to transfers to help out, make sure everyone ends up where they need to go. So we're there, and before you get transferred, you drop off the keys and the phone in a bag outside the chapel, so that way no one accidentally leaves an area with the old phone/keys, because it's a pain to have to go get them. So, we go and there's a bag there for the Raymond Elders, and I say " That's weird, neither of them are getting transferred." But don't think much of it. Well, we're in the meeting and they announce that serving in Raymond is Elder Spencer with his new companion from the North, Elder Burrows. And Elder Burrows stands up and…
